Summer is always a good time for a blockbuster – if the promise of warmth comes good then it is a great way to relax, and if rain should encroach then it provides entertainment as respite.
Now it’s time for Big Finish to join the party, with another bombastic entry for Kate Stewart and Osgood taking aim at the holidays in UNIT: Assembled. For the fourth boxset featuring the latest UNIT lineup, Big Finish goes all the way back the 70s (or was it the 80s?) and a Silurian menace threatening humankind.
Good job they’ve got some old friends to call up – but the Silurians aren’t on their own either…
As the year draws to a close, Big Finish brings another bumper UNIT epic to warm the cockles. This time, an investigation of an energy buildup takes Kate and Osgood into conflict against one of the more insidious alien threats that the earth has faced – and once it’s time for a Silent Night, will anyone involved Remember Christmas, or anything else?
Last November, Big Finish introduced Kate Stewart and Osgood to their audio universe in UNIT: Extinction, which was one of my favourite releases of the entire year. Now, Kate and Osgood (and Josh and Sam) return – their task, should they elect to acquiesce, is to investigate missing people and secretive use of extraterrestrial technology. But no simple operation this – across several continents they will face threats both alien and closer to home, and risk capture, being disavowed by their government, and death. Even Tom Cruise would balk at an assignment this unachievable…
For the first time outside of my slightly disturbed hopes during The Kingmaker, the world of post-2005 Doctor Who comes to Big Finish, and with a Redgrave no less! Jemma is back as Kate Stewart and is joined by Ingrid Oliver’s Osgood as UNIT face a new spearhead from a returning alien menace. How will the 21st-century UNIT fare with no Doctor to help, and is this start of a new Big Finish range any good?
