The Essential Doctor Who: Time Travel

Essential DW Time Travel front cover
The Doctor has always challenged the linear conception of time. Since his television voyage began in
1963, the TARDIS has travelled backwards, forwards and even sideways through the mysterious
Vortex.
The latest issue of The Essential Doctor Who traces the development of these time-bending narratives, describing the rules that were laid down – and subsequently revised – by the series’ writers and producers. (more…)

Doctor Who Magazine #510

IN ISSUE 510, DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE
PAYS TRIBUTE TO SIR JOHN HURT

 Doctor Who Magazine #510

From Alien to Z Cars, DWM celebrates the extraordinary career of an acting legend who became the Doctor’s secret incarnation in 2013, including tributes from David Tennant, Steven Moffat, David Warner and Louise Jameson.

“It doesn’t need saying – John Hurt was one of the greatest actors who ever lived,” says Doctor Who‘s executive producer, Steven Moffat. “That’s not even controversial, that’s just a fact. I only met him a handful of times, but I can confirm the other thing that everyone else has been saying about him: he was also incredibly nice. Now, nice doesn’t seem like much of compliment, but you have to remember that this man was, quite rightly, worshipped by everyone he met. Worship has been known to go to people’s heads – but not John’s. If a man can remain humble and kind and warm as the world basically genuflects around him, then that is no ordinary man. The Doctor would be proud to be John Hurt – and for one very special day, he was.” (more…)

ISSUE 504 OF DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF THE CYBERMEN!
Doctor Who Magazine 504 cover a

50 years ago, the Cybermen first marched onto our screens. We ask the costume designer who gave them life about their enduring appeal

“People often come up to me and say, ‘I think your Cybermen were the most frightening,’ says costume designer Alexandra Tynan, who gave the original Cybermen their distinctive look for 1966’s The Tenth Planet. “I looked at them yesterday, when I re-watched The Tenth Planet, and I thought, ‘I suppose they are a bit scary.’ At the time, they got a lot of press, some of it very negative. Angry parents said that we were scaring the bejesus out of their kids. Am I personally responsible, with my Cybermen, for a whole generation of disturbed people? The number of adults who have come up to me and said, ‘Your Cybermen terrified me when I was a child,’ and I have apologised a thousand times (more…)

Glasgow Film and Comic Con – Day 2

Comic Con is always a highlight. If you’re like me, then the dealer’s hall is great fun, wandering around spotting fun t-shirts and retro toys from your childhood (oh how that G1 Metroplex was tempting), alongside spotting glimpses of famous faces from the various shows I’ve enjoyed over the years.Glasgow Film and Comic Con 2016

This year, I attended on the Sunday, so it was a bit quieter than the busy Saturday. The signings had been moved up to a new area upstairs, overlooking the river, which made for a much nicer, bright, open area. Various cult figures were present, including Jimmy Vee, Ray Park, Margot Kidder and Sean Astin.

However for me, there was one guest I had to see. The Sixth Doctor himself, Colin Baker. (more…)

The latest Doctor Who Magazine Special Edition take a look at how the world’s longest-running science-fiction series has travelled to locations far and wide.

In its early days Doctor Who was recorded on cumbersome cameras tethered to claustrophobic and often inadequate studios. The show rarely escaped these confines in the 1960s, but as technology improved, producers and directors became more adventurous.

Location shooting has helped to create some of the most memorable episodes in the series’ long history. This unique publication tells the story of those episodes and the people who made them happen. (more…)
