News

First the good news….

Well after months of silence we have official word that we are indeed getting Doctor Who in 2016, with the confirmation of the 2016 Christmas Special.

Steven Moffat

The Alert among you, or anyone who follows our twitter feed who read about it months ago, will have deduced that this means the Christmas special will sadly be all the Doctor Who we get (but expect the Doctor to turn up in other places to help with Doctor Withdrawal).  However there are some other positives to offset this less than fantastic news.

Firstly S10 will be Moffat’s last.  He’s been holding the reins for well over half a decade and he’s not quite done yet as he still needs to write, make and promote S10.  But with the end of one era we also get the start of something new with Chris Chibnall taking over as show runner.  The Broadchurch writer is a huge Doctor Who fan and has already written for the show.

As these rumors have been doing the rounds for a while (although other names were in and out the frame) it’s good that things are clear now.   We’re all hoping here that Peter Capaldi can be tempted to stay on to have a smooth transition that’s less abrupt than the complete shake up that S5 was (not that S5 was bad by any means).

But in the meantime thank you Mr Moffat, you are leaving a tough target for Chris Chibnall to hit but we’re sure he’s well capable of blowing a TARDIS sized hole right in the middle of it!  Geronimo!

FIND OUT HOW RIVER SONG MEETS THE EIGHTH DOCTOR – IN THE NEW ISSUE OF DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE!
 Doctor Who Magazine #495

Doctor Who Magazine finds out what happens when River Song runs into the Eighth Doctor in the new audio series The Diary of River Song – and interviews both Paul McGann and Alex Kingston!

“River has to interact with the Eighth Doctor to save him, to help him,” explains Alex. “When she’s figured out how she can do that without having to be physically present in front of him, alongside helping him, she can then tease and flirt a little bit, because she knows she’s safe, and she knows she hasn’t overstepped a boundary, or changed his or her future in any way by that actual physical interaction. So she can then have fun! She’s in control.”

And what does the Eighth Doctor make of River?

Big Finish to say: Elementary my Dear Doctor! (no not Watson)

Fan’s want it, Moffat teases it while Gatiss say’s NO!

But finally we’ve got get the Doctor and Sherlock teaming up! (just perhaps not the Doctor or the Sherlock you were thinking of)

Big Finish is Wholocked?Continuing their adaptations of Virgin’s New Adventures, Big Finish have teamed up McCoy’s 7th Doctor and Nicholas Briggs Sherlock  in  Doctor Who: All-Consuming Fire

The two heroes unite to investigate a sinister intelligence lurking on the streets of 1887 London, aided by their faithful companions Ace (Sophie Aldred), Bernice Summerfield (Lisa Bowerman) and Doctor John Watson (Richard Earl).

Big Finish has an excellent series of Sherlock stories so this should be a juicy encounter indeed.

Big Finish’s ‘The Omega Factor’ in BBC 4’s 2016 Audio Drama shortlist!

The highly recommended, and down right terrifying, audio drama ‘The Omega Factor: The Old Gods’ has been short listed for Best Online Only Audio Drama by the BBC.  You can buy the box set, with Louise Jameson and Terry Molloy, here.

Omega Factor

The end times are coming!?! Or everything old will be new again.

With Peter Capaldi and show runner Steven Moffat both talking about their respective exits this week (here and here)  it’s starting to look like S11 will see a new Doctor and production team.  At this time S10’s air date hasn’t been confirmed but with a later start to production it’s either going to be split between 2016/17 or air in 2017 (probably back in it’s Easter slot). Capaldi Rocks

Although some may take Peter’s comments about this being his last year as meaning he’ll regenerate in the Xmas Special.  We hope not as Capaldi’s Doctor took it to another level this year and he deserves at least one more full season.

As always with Doctor Who the exit of the old team means the entrance of the new team and a big shakeup to the show.  Could this be the time for the first female Doctor?

Big Finish – Torchwood 1.4: One Rule

After last month’s trek 5 years beyond Miracle Day, it’s back in time for One Rule and a pre-Battle of Canary Wharf Yvonne Hartman.

BF TW 104 One Rule

Director of Torchwood One in London, we last saw Yvonne in the Army of GhostsDoomsday two-parter, (if you’re not familiar, now’s a good time to check out the two episodes… done? Yes, it is a striking resemblance between Martha and her cousin!) so she’s possibly not be the most expected choice of episode star for this series. It’s also the first time that Yvonne has appeared in a story under the Torchwood banner, so does One Rule manage to keep consistent quality with the previous stories?
